How effective are masks against H1N1 virus?

People coming to various screening centres and hospitals following the H1N1 flu scare have been seen using the masks for over four hours and more.

Paediatrician Sanjay Lalwani too advocates the use of home-made cloth masks. "In fact, a three-layered mask made of thin cloth is one of the most effective masks in the absence of the N95 variety. Also, people do not realise that the disposable masks are meant to be disposed of after one use. Cloth masks or even handkerchiefs, on the other hand, can be washed and used again," said Lalwani.

To make your own mask, boil a cotton T-shirt for 10 minutes. Then dry it, and cut it into about nine pieces. The first piece should be wide enough to cover your nose and mouth comfortably, as shown above. The other eight squares should fit inside the part that goes over your face. You should alternate the way you place the grain of the squares. The mask should be tied tightly about the mouth and nose to be most effective.

After using the mask, it must be washed with bleach to sanitize it.
