PESAKIT MENTAL MENINGKAT 15.6 PERATUS TAHUN LALU: LIOW
Berita Harian Selasa , 18 Januari 2011

- BERNAMA

PILOT PROJECT IN 4 SCHOOLS TO IDENTIFY MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
The Star Tuesday January 18, 2011

PUTRAJAYA: The Health and Education Ministries will jointly launch a pilot project in four secondary schools to identify and address mental health problems early, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Liow said the move was part of efforts to identify those facing problems like stress and depression, and provide the help needed so that they received the necessary attention before the problems worsened and possibly led to drastic measures, including suicide.

He said a rising trend in the number of youths suffering mental health issues was one of the reasons the two ministries decided there was a need to introduce a mental health programme in schools.

"According to my ministry's National Health Mobility Survey, the number of those seeking medical attention for mental health problems was 10.6% in 1996 but this rose to 11.2%, with 6.4% having considered suicide, in 2006.

"We feel it is alarming that a high number of those seeking treatment in 2006 were those aged between 16 and 19 years and between 70 and 74 years," he told a press conference here Tuesday, after attending the Mental Health Advisory Council meeting here Tuesday.

The pilot project, which will begin immediately, will be conducted at the SM Sains in Teluk Intan, Perak; SMK Ahmad Badawi in Kepala Batas, Penang; SMK Simpang Bekok in Jasin, Malacca and SMK St Michael in Penampang, Sabah.

Under the project, students will be asked to take a mental health evaluation test to determine if they were facing any mental health issues and the level of the problem they faced.

Mental Health Advisory Council member Dr Omar Mihat said the project will involve selected teachers being trained to translate the results of the tests and determine if students were suffering from metal problems, as well as advising them on how they could reduce stress or depression.

"The pilot project will be conducted over six-months to gauge its effectiveness and we expect to introduce it in schools nationwide by the end of the year, once we have ironed out any teething problems," he said.

Liow also said that the ministry would be conducting various programmes to raise awareness on mental health among the public, like the Anti-Stigma Campaign that will be launched later this year.

He said the the campaign would educate the public against attaching a stigma to those treated for mental health problems as this affected efforts to help former patients return to the community and live a normal life.
