19,300 seek help from Befrienders

KUALA LUMPUR: As many as 19,300 distress calls were received last year and 20% of the callers expressed suicidal tendencies, said National Council of Befrienders chairman S. Gangadara Vadivel.

Many who contacted Befrienders, an NGO that provides counselling to those in distress, said that they felt helpless, isolated and experienced emotional pain.

“Most of the callers, which included contact made through emails and face-to-face sessions, were aged below 30 and the profile is not much different from the Health Ministry’s data on high-risk group for suicide, which were ages 16 to 25,” said Gangadara when asked to comment on mental health issues in conjunction with a World Mental Health seminar yesterday.

That age-range, he said, was stressful years for the callers, with problems including relationship difficulties with loved ones as well as stress from teachers, bosses, exams and homework.

Gangadara said the other group to watch out for were seniors aged 65 and above, who make up 2% of the overall callers.

“For this group, loneliness following the loss of spouses and companionship is the main problem, besides dealing with illnesses,” he said.

Mental Health Association president Datin Ang Kim Teng said those suffering from mental health issues could live normal lives and even work if they seek medical help.

“Even with one of the worst forms of mental disabilities, such as schizophrenia, patients can live independent lives if they take drugs that restore the chemical imbalance in their brain,” she said.

In Ipoh, the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, said social stigma remained a persistent barrier to good mental health because of misconceptions about the causes and nature of mental illness.

He said mental illness was often viewed as a manifestation of personal weakness or involving supernatural forces, while the stigma attached to it prevented people from coming forward to seek help.

“According to the Schizophrenia Registry Report for 2003-2005 of the National Mental Health Registry, patients took an average of 28 months from the time the symptoms first appeared to seek treatment. In most cases, the illness had reached a critical phase.
